about

Jen wrote this song about the Special Period in Cuba in the 1990s after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and with the continued devastation of the ongoing US embargo. The period caused great suffering among the Cuban people, and it also brought great transformation in the form of intensified cooperation to keep schools and hospitals open, and the successful introduction of domestic sustainable agriculture grown to larger and larger scales. Without romanticizing a society embattled by global capitalism and internal challenges to democracy and human rights, this song is a tribute to the incredible outcomes of interdependency within Cuba and to the socialist vision of the Cuban revolution.

lyrics

World Go Blind [2008]

I opened up my eyes to see the sun had not arose
The morning birds flew down to me
They’re hungry
My hands were warm where you once held
My heart inside your palm

Now empty air is all I have
Can my own hands hold me?

Cuz the feast has turned to famine all the shelves are bare

And the bread we used to count on is no longer there
The crumbs have blown into the sea

[Chorus:]
Eye for eye will one day make the world go blind
And when we do then we might finally see
That you cut the cord
Turned me into an orphan child
But I raised myself, did it big
Now look at me
Oh everyone now look at me

[Chorus]
